Cortes Builders is a family-owned company rooted in more than sixty-five years of building experience in the Pittsburgh region.
The story began in the 1960s, when Ralph Cortes immigrated from Calabria, Italy and settled in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. A foreman for a respected commercial contractor, contributing to projects such as the Cathedral of Learning, Ralph eventually established his own business, guided by discipline, integrity, and pride in his craft.
Building was never simply a profession; it was a trade learned by hand and passed from one generation to the next. Ralph’s sons, Rich and Ron, carried the business forward for more than four decades, shaping both commercial and residential projects throughout the region. Rich’s engineering background brought technical precision to the work, while the family’s standards remained unchanged:
build it properly, build it to last, and stand behind it.
Today, Cortes Builders is led by the third generation – Matt, John, and Joe Cortes. Raised in Upper St. Clair, they were surrounded from an early age by the craftsmanship, care, and accountability that now define the company.
What began as a grandfather’s trade has evolved into a shared commitment: one grounded in experience, continuity, and enduring pride in the finished work.

At Cortes Builders, leadership remains directly involved in every project. A member of the Cortes family serves as foreman and primary point of contact on site, ensuring continuity, accountability, and thoughtful oversight from start to finish.
With decades of experience, the firm approaches home building with a level of technical coordination that is increasingly uncommon. Structural systems, energy performance, waterproofing, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical components are carefully integrated to work as one cohesive whole.
But performance alone is not enough.
Each residence reflects a deep respect for materials and craftsmanship – from intricate millwork and masonry to the subtle detailing that defines proportion and permanence. Many of the tradesmen and subcontractors who contribute to Cortes projects have worked alongside the family for decades, creating a culture of trust, pride, and shared standards.
